The Town Barber |
John was reared in
Inverness, Mississippi, where he began picking cotton at the age of 4. It
was here that he began
day dreaming
on his cotton sack. |
John was inspired by the
town barber, Mr. Pete Adams, to become a barber. When he was able to leave
the cotton fields, he attended the
Jackson Barber College. |

The Mentor |
John attended
Mississippi Valley State University, in Itta Bena, where he was also
the
school's barber. |
John came to Starkville with "the shirt on his back and
a few coins in his pocket". He was the first barber instructor in
Starkville and mentored
students at
Mississippi State University. |

The Laboratory |
|
|
The Father |
John's laboratory was his
kitchen. John, wearing his
Omega Psi
Phi shirt, is pouring up one of his early formulas with the help of
friend. He says "It all started in my kitchen". |
John takes
time out from filling jars to feed his youngest son, Wesley. Wesley is now
17 and a star basketball player for Starkville High School. John's
daughters live in Wisconsin.
|
Having started at a very early age
experimenting with remedies for razor bumps, itching, burning, and other
skin care solutions, children he grew up with called John 'The Mad Scientist'.
John's quest for the causes of
Pseudofolliculitis Barbae is what sets
Shaver's Choice products apart from the competition, that only treat
symptoms. John's story is one of perseverance and overcoming
challenges for a black man in rural Mississippi of the 50's and 60's. |
